Before any fruits or vegetables ever make it into my fridge, they get washed.

This is something I started doing years ago when my kids were little and we were constantly running from practice to practice. I learned quickly that if fruit was clean and ready to eat, they grabbed it. If it wasn’t, they didn’t.

So I began washing everything as soon as I walked in the door from the grocery store, and I’ve done it that way ever since. Over the years, this DIY fruit and veggie wash has become part of my weekly routine, and it’s one of the simplest habits that’s helped me keep our kitchen running smoothly.

Now, with one daughter engaged and in her own home, two kids in college, and my “baby” still in high school, I still follow the same routine.

It keeps our kitchen running smoothly and makes healthy choices easier.

My Simple Sink Method (What I’ve Used for Years)

When I get home from the store, the first thing I do is head to the kitchen sink.

I rinse it out, plug it, and place all my fruits and vegetables inside. Apples, grapes, berries, peppers, cucumbers, whatever I brought home that week.

Then I sprinkle baking soda over everything and fill the sink with cold water. While everything soaks, I put groceries away and get settled back into the house.

By the time I’m finished, my produce is ready to rinse, dry, and store.

What You’ll Need:

Clean sink or large bowl

Cold water

1–2 tablespoons baking soda

How I Do It:

Place produce in a clean sink.

Sprinkle baking soda over the top.

Fill with cold water until covered.

Let soak 12–15 minutes.

Gently rub firm fruits and vegetables.

Rinse well under running water.

Dry with a clean towel.

This method helps remove dirt, residue, and surface pesticides without using harsh chemicals.

It’s simple, affordable, and something I’ve trusted in my own home for years.

A Little Tip for Berry Lovers

We are a big berry family in this house.

Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and grapes are always in our fridge when they’re in season.

After washing and drying berries, I store them in mason jars in the refrigerator. This keeps them fresh much longer.

Do You Really Need a Produce Spray?

These days, it seems like there’s a spray for everything, including fruits and vegetables.

Many of them are beautifully marketed and promise a lot, but for most families, they’re simply an unnecessary expense.

Over the years, I’ve tried quite a few of those sprays myself, simply out of curiosity and convenience. But I always found myself coming back to baking soda and water, because it cleans produce well without adding another product to my shopping list.

Sometimes I can’t help but wonder… are we trying to wash toxins off our food with more toxins, simply because many of us assume something is safer when it’s marketed that way?

In many ways, it reminds me of how our grandmothers cared for their homes using simple, natural ingredients and common sense. They trusted what came from the earth more than what came in a bottle.

We may live in a different world now, but that same mindset still serves us well.

That said, I know some people enjoy having a quick spray on hand, especially for busy afternoons or lunch packing.

If that’s you, here’s the gentle option I recommend.

Quick Baking Soda Produce Spray (For Busy Days)

This is meant for quick rinses when you’re grabbing a piece of fruit and heading out the door.

It’s not a replacement for a full wash, just a helpful convenience.

You’ll Need:

1 cup warm distilled water

½ teaspoon baking soda

Glass spray bottle

Instructions:

Dissolve baking soda in warm water.

Let cool completely.

Pour into spray bottle.

Shake before each use.

Spray produce, rinse, and dry.

Store in the refrigerator and use within 5–7 days.

Final Thoughts

Somewhere along the way, we were taught that convenience should always come first.

That if there’s a shortcut, a spray, or a packaged solution, it must be better than taking a few extra minutes to do something well.

But over the years, I’ve learned that those little “convenience” purchases add up. They cost more. They clutter our homes. And many times, they don’t even work as well as the simple methods our grandmothers relied on.

Washing produce with baking soda and water takes a few extra minutes. Storing food properly takes a little intention. Building healthy routines takes consistency.

But those small efforts pay off.

So many of those old-fashioned habits haven’t disappeared because they stopped working.

They’ve just gotten lost along the way.

And they’re worth bringing back.

One simple routine at a time.

A Gentle Way to Welcome a New Season into Your Home

Long before shelves were lined with synthetic sprays and artificial fragrances, herbs were simply part of everyday homemaking. Sage was a staple in kitchens, often hanging to dry, simply because it worked. It freshened the air, added warmth to meals, and connected the home to the garden just outside the door.

Somewhere along the way, we were told that caring for our homes had to smell like chemicals and come in plastic bottles. Using sage again feels like finding our way back to something simpler. It reminds me that non toxic living does not have to be complicated. It can begin with a handful of fresh herbs, a pot of water, and the willingness to try the old ways again.

That is why I love sage. It brings history back into the home in the quietest and most beautiful way.

Why I Love Using Sage in My Home

Sage has been used in homes for centuries as a way to mark change and bring a sense of freshness into everyday spaces. Long before we relied on artificial fragrances, herbs were part of the rhythm of caring for a home.

The yogi in me loves the idea of sage as a cleanser of a space, not because I expect it to work magic, but because it gives me a moment to pause, reset, and welcome a new season with intention. After a deep clean, a simple mist of this spray feels like the final step that signals a room is truly finished.

As winter slowly gives way to spring, this has become one of my favorite ways to mark that shift. It is a small ritual that carries history, beauty, and a fresh beginning all at once.

Hey friends!

Today, I want to share a little adventure from my kitchen that has truly transformed my dishwashing routine. If you’re like me, always on the lookout for natural, cost-effective solutions, this DIY dishwasher detergent is a game-changer. Plus, with the growing interest in homemade cleaning products on platforms like Pinterest and Google, it’s clear that many of us are eager to embrace more sustainable living practices.

Why Go DIY with Dishwasher Detergent?

Making your own dishwasher detergent isn’t just about saving a few bucks (though that’s a nice perk!). It’s about knowing exactly what’s in the products you use daily. Commercial detergents often contain chemicals that can be harsh on both our health and the environment. By crafting your own, you:

Control the Ingredients: Ensure only safe, non-toxic components are cleaning your dishes.

Reduce Environmental Impact: Minimize the release of harmful substances into our waterways.

Save Money: Most DIY recipes cost a fraction of store-bought detergents.

Customize to Your Needs: Adjust the formula based on your water hardness or personal preferences.

Why I Love This Recipe (and Why You Will Too!)

While researching the best ingredients for DIY dishwasher detergent, I kept coming across the same complaints—cloudy glassware and dull-looking dishes. So many recipes seemed to work “okay,” but the results often left people less than thrilled. That’s where this recipe stands out!

By using citric acid to fight hard water deposits, fine-grain sea salt to help soften the water, and a balance of washing soda and baking soda to cut through grime, this formula leaves dishes sparkling clean without that frustrating film. And let’s not forget the optional lemon essential oil, not only does it add a fresh scent, but it also gives your detergent that extra grease-fighting power.

I’ve tested this recipe over and over (trust me, my family does A LOT of dishes), and it consistently delivers shiny glasses, spotless silverware, and no residue in sight. If you’ve been let down by other DIY detergent recipes, this is the one you’ll want to try.

The Magic Behind the Ingredients

Let’s break down why each ingredient plays a crucial role in this detergent:

Washing Soda (Sodium Carbonate): A natural cleaner that cuts through grease and grime, neutralizes odors, and enhances the cleaning power of the detergent.

It combats mineral deposits, prevents water spots, and ensures your glassware comes out sparkling.

Instructions:

Mix It Up: In a large bowl, combine the washing soda, baking soda, citric acid, and sea salt. If you’re adding lemon essential oil, drop it in and stir thoroughly to ensure even distribution.

Store Properly: Transfer the mixture to an airtight container to keep moisture out. A mason jar or a recycled detergent box works perfectly.

Use: For each load, scoop about 1-2 tablespoons of the detergent into your dishwasher’s detergent compartment.

Pro Tip: To prevent any residue or spots, fill your dishwasher’s rinse aid compartment with white vinegar. It’s a natural and effective rinse agent that pairs beautifully with this DIY detergent.

How Many Wash Cycles Will This Recipe Cover?

This recipe makes approximately 2 ½ cups of detergent. Since you’ll use 1-2 tablespoons per load, you can expect it to last for 20-40 wash cycles, depending on the amount used per load and the size of your dishwasher. For my family of six, this typically lasts us about 2-3 weeks!

Storage and Shelf Life

When stored in a cool, dry place in an airtight container, this detergent can last up to six months. However, with regular dishwashing, you’ll likely find yourself whipping up a new batch well before then!

A Little Disclaimer

This recipe only works properly with fine-grain sea salt. Other salts, including Epsom salt and coarse kosher salt don’t dissolve correctly in dishwashers and can leave a cloudy film on dishes. This recipe has worked wonders for me, results can vary based on water hardness and dishwasher models. It’s always a good idea to monitor your dishes and adjust the formula if needed.

Why Choose DIY Baby-Safe Laundry Detergent?

Store-bought baby detergents often come with hefty price tags and sometimes contain hidden chemicals that may not be as gentle as advertised. Making your own detergent ensures:

Control Over Ingredients: You know exactly what goes into your detergent.

Gentle on Baby’s Skin: Free from synthetic fragrances, dyes, and harsh chemicals.

Environmentally Friendly: Uses biodegradable ingredients and reduces waste.

Cost-Effective: Saves money compared to buying commercial baby detergents.

The Problem with Harsh Chemicals

Many commercial detergents contain chemicals that can have adverse effects on your baby’s health and well-being, such as:

Skin Irritation: Synthetic fragrances, dyes, and harsh cleaning agents can cause rashes, dryness, or eczema in sensitive skin.

Respiratory Issues: Strong scents and chemical residues can aggravate respiratory conditions or lead to allergies.

Endocrine Disruption: Some detergents contain phthalates or other chemicals that may interfere with hormone regulation.

Environmental Impact: Harsh chemicals contribute to water pollution, affecting aquatic life and ecosystems.

By making your own detergent, you’re taking a proactive step to avoid these risks and protect both your baby and the planet.

If you’ve ever tried adding essential oils to your laundry detergent only to find the scent disappears after the final rinse, you’re not alone. Finding non-toxic ways to scent your laundry naturally is easier than you think and much safer for your health and the environment. While essential oils can make your laundry room smell amazing during the wash, they often don’t cling to fabrics through the rinse cycle. Luckily, there are several ways to naturally scent your laundry and keep your clothes smelling fresh and chemical-free. Here are some tried-and-true methods:

8. DIY Dryer Sheets (Reusable and Chemical-Free)

Why Choose Natural Scents for Your Laundry?

Conventional laundry products achieve their long-lasting scents through synthetic chemicals like phthalates, benzyl acetate, and limonene. While these compounds are effective at binding fragrances to fabrics, they come with potential health risks, including skin irritation, respiratory issues, and hormone disruption. Additionally, these chemicals can contribute to environmental pollution during manufacturing and after disposal. By switching to natural scenting methods, you can avoid exposing your family to these hidden dangers. Natural options not only provide a safer alternative but also allow you to personalize your laundry routine with scents that reflect your preferences, all while supporting a more sustainable lifestyle.

In today’s world, many household products contain harsh chemicals that can negatively impact our health and the environment. From cleaning supplies to personal care items, these toxins can lead to allergies, respiratory issues, and even long-term health concerns. But there’s good news—creating a chemical-free home is easier than you might think! By making a few simple changes and DIY swaps, you can reduce the toxins in your home, protect your family’s health, and do your part for the planet.

In this guide, we’ll explore easy and effective ways to make your home non-toxic and chemical-free, room by room, you can also click the underlined topics for more info, recipes or my recommendations that I’ve linked.

This site contains Amazon Associate affiliate links.

Why Go Non-Toxic?

There are many reasons to detoxify your home from harmful chemicals, and here are the top three:

Health Benefits: A non-toxic home reduces exposure to harmful chemicals that can cause allergies, asthma, hormone disruption, and even cancer. Breathing in cleaner air and using safer products will promote better health for everyone in your household.

Environmental Impact: Many toxic cleaning agents and personal care products end up in our water systems, polluting the environment and harming wildlife. By choosing non-toxic alternatives, you’re contributing to a healthier planet.

Cost Savings: Making your own natural cleaning products and personal care items is not only healthier, but it can also save you money. Many DIY alternatives use affordable, everyday ingredients you may already have at home!

Key Areas to Detoxify in Your Home

Let’s dive into the main areas where toxic chemicals are often found and explore practical swaps you can make to detoxify your space.

Kitchen

Non-Toxic Cleaners: The kitchen is the heart of the home, but it’s also where many chemical cleaners are used. Instead of relying on commercial cleaners full of harsh ingredients, you can make your own all-purpose cleaner with a few simple, non-toxic items. Here’s an easy recipe:

DIY All-Purpose Cleaner:

1 cup white vinegar

1 cup water

15 drops of your favorite essential oils (try lemon for its antibacterial properties)
Simply mix and store in a spray bottle for wiping down counters, tables, and surfaces.

Food Storage: Many plastic food containers contain BPA or phthalates, chemicals that can leach into your food and disrupt hormones. Switch to safer alternatives like glass, stainless steel, or silicone containers for healthier food storage.

Cookware: ( click to see my recommendations) Non-stick pots and pans often contain chemicals like PFOAs that can release toxic fumes when heated. Opt for cast iron, stainless steel, or ceramic cookware to avoid these hazards.

Bathroom

Toxic-Free Cleaning Recipes: The bathroom is another area where chemical cleaners are often used. You can keep it sparkling clean with natural alternatives. Try this DIY toilet bowl cleaner for a chemical-free solution:

DIY Toilet Bowl Cleaner:

1/2 cup baking soda

1/4 cup vinegar

10 drops tea tree oil
Sprinkle the baking soda into the toilet, add the vinegar, and let it sit for a few minutes before scrubbing.

Natural Skincare and Personal Products: Many store-bought personal care products are full of synthetic fragrances, parabens, and sulfates. Switching to natural skincare products, like organic bar soaps, shampoos, and lotions, will help reduce your exposure to toxins. You can even make your own products at home! Try a simple sugar scrub or body butter recipe using coconut oil and essential oils for a nourishing, all-natural option.

Living Room

Air Quality: Did you know that indoor air can be more polluted than outdoor air due to household chemicals? Improve the air quality in your living room by placing air-purifying plants like spider plants, aloe vera, and peace lilies around the space. They help remove toxins naturally while adding a touch of greenery.

Fragrance Alternatives: Synthetic air fresheners and candles often contain harmful chemicals like phthalates and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Instead, use essential oil diffusers to naturally scent your home. You can even make your own room sprays using essential oils, water, and a splash of witch hazel or vodka. For example, a relaxing lavender and eucalyptus blend can create a calming atmosphere.

Laundry Room

DIY Laundry Detergent: ( click for full recipe) Commercial laundry detergents often contain harsh chemicals and synthetic fragrances. A simple, natural alternative is making your own detergent. Here’s a recipe using ingredients you might already have at home:

DIY Laundry Detergent:

1 cup washing soda

1 cup baking soda

1/2 cup borax

1/2 cup Epsom salt

30 drops essential oil (like lavender or lemon for a fresh scent)
Mix these ingredients and store in an airtight container. Use 1-2 tablespoons per load of laundry.

Drying Solutions: Skip the dryer sheets and opt for wool dryer balls, which soften clothes naturally and can be scented with essential oils for a fresh, chemical-free finish.

Bedroom

Bedding and Mattresses: ( click for my picks) Many mattresses and bedding are treated with chemicals like flame retardants. Switching to organic cotton sheets and mattresses made from natural materials like wool or latex can help reduce exposure to these toxins while providing a more comfortable sleep environment.

Dust and Allergen Control: Dust mites, pet dander, and allergens can accumulate in bedrooms. Keep them at bay by vacuuming regularly with a HEPA filter and washing bedding in hot water weekly. This not only cleans but helps remove potential toxins that may have settled into fabrics.

Switch to Natural Personal Care Products

Every day, we apply dozens of personal care products to our skin, hair, and bodies. Many conventional products contain harmful chemicals like parabens, sulfates, and synthetic fragrances that can be absorbed into the body. Switching to natural alternatives can make a big difference in reducing toxic exposure.

Skincare: Look for products made with organic, plant-based ingredients. Or, try making your own sugar scrub using coconut oil and sugar for exfoliation, or a simple body butter using shea butter and essential oils.

Hair Care: Choose shampoos and conditioners that are sulfate-free and use natural moisturizers like aloe vera or coconut oil.

Deodorant: Conventional deodorants often contain aluminum and other harmful ingredients. Try a natural deodorant or make your own with baking soda, coconut oil, and essential oils.

Use Essential Oils to Replace Toxic Fragrances

Synthetic fragrances in air fresheners, candles, and personal care products often contain hidden chemicals that can trigger headaches, asthma, and hormone disruption. Essential oils offer a natural alternative for scenting your home and body.

Use an essential oil diffuser to add a pleasant fragrance to your home without chemicals. Some popular blends include:

Relaxation: Lavender + eucalyptus

Focus: Peppermint + rosemary

Energy: Citrus (lemon, orange, grapefruit)

DIY Room Spray: Combine water, witch hazel, and essential oils in a spray bottle to freshen up any room. Try lavender and tea tree oil for a calming and antibacterial blend.

Non-Toxic Pest Control Solutions

Rather than using chemical sprays and poisons, opt for natural pest control solutions. For instance, peppermint and tea tree oils are great for repelling ants and spiders. Diatomaceous earth is another non-toxic option that can help keep bugs at bay.

To prevent infestations, keep your home clean, seal cracks and entry points, and use traps where necessary instead of harmful pesticides.

Benefits of a Chemical-Free Home

Switching to non-toxic products offers numerous benefits:

Better Health: You and your family will experience fewer allergic reactions, headaches, and irritations. You’ll breathe cleaner air and reduce your exposure to dangerous chemicals.

A Greener Planet: Using non-toxic, eco-friendly products reduces pollution and helps protect the environment.

Saving Money: Many DIY cleaning solutions are much cheaper than store-bought alternatives, saving you money over time.

Making your own laundry detergent is not only easy and affordable, but it’s also a great way to reduce exposure to harsh chemicals. If you’re like me, and you prefer natural alternatives for your home, this recipe is a great place to start.
Simple Everyday Kitchen Cleaning

Updated for 2026

When I first started making my own cleaners, I just wanted fewer chemicals under my sink. I did not overthink it. I grabbed vinegar, baking soda, some essential oils, and felt very accomplished.

Over time, I learned something important.

Cleaning and disinfecting are not the same thing.

Most of the time in a normal home, we are simply cleaning. We are wiping crumbs, cutting grease, washing away everyday mess. That does not require hospital-level products. It requires something effective and safe.

I am not a germ phobia mom. I believe immune systems are built in real life kitchens. But I also do not ignore food safety. Raw chicken on the counter is different than a splash of coffee.

This post is for everyday cleaning. The kind we do constantly. The kind that keeps a home fresh without turning it into a science lab.

I am sharing two simple options. One made with citrus infused vinegar, and one without vinegar for those who prefer a gentler approach.

Both are practical. Both are effective for daily messes. Neither makes exaggerated disinfecting claims.

Let’s keep this simple.

This site may contain Amazon Associate affiliate links.

Option One

Citrus Infused Vinegar All Purpose Cleaner

If you juice oranges or lemons like we do, do not throw those peels away. They make the most beautiful, old fashioned cleaner.

To make citrus vinegar:

Fill a glass jar with orange or lemon peels.
Cover completely with white vinegar.
Seal and let it sit for two to three weeks.
Strain out the peels.

The vinegar scent softens and takes on a light citrus smell. It feels like something your great grandmother would have kept in her pantry.

To make the cleaner:

1 cup citrus infused vinegar
1 cup distilled water
1 teaspoon liquid castile soap

Pour into a glass spray bottle and gently swirl to combine.

Use this on sealed countertops, sinks, appliance exteriors, and tile.

Do not use on marble, granite, natural stone, or unsealed wood. Vinegar can etch those surfaces over time.

Option Two

Non Vinegar Everyday Cleaner

If you have stone countertops or simply dislike the smell of vinegar, this option works beautifully.

1 and 1 half cups distilled water
1 tablespoon liquid castile soap
1 tablespoon 70 percent isopropyl alcohol
Optional 5 to 10 drops essential oil for scent

This version lifts grease, dries a bit faster, and works well on sealed surfaces.

Again, this is for cleaning. Not disinfecting.

Cleaning Versus Disinfecting

Cleaning and disinfecting are not the same thing.

Cleaning removes grease, crumbs, and everyday mess.
Disinfecting is for higher risk situations, like raw meat spills or sickness in the house.

I do most of the cooking in our home, and I am careful with raw meat. Chicken especially. I wash my hands constantly, wipe things down right away, and I do not pretend vinegar alone is enough in that situation.

Here is what I actually do.

First, I wash the area with hot soapy water. That removes the grease and residue.
Then I follow with a non toxic disinfectant.

I keep a few trusted disinfecting products under my sink for those moments. I do not use them daily, but I do use them when it matters. Here are a few options I personally like and feel good about keeping in our home: CleanSmart Daily Surface Cleaner, Seventh Generation Lemongrass Citrus Disinfecting Multi-Surface Cleaner & Seventh Generation Disinfectant Spray.

That balance feels right to me.

How I Use This Daily Cleaner

Shake gently before each use.
Spray directly onto the surface.
Wipe with a clean cloth or natural sponge.

For stuck on messes, let it sit for a few minutes before wiping.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use this on quartz
Yes, most sealed quartz handles these formulas well, but always test a small area first.

Why did you remove baking soda from the original recipe
When vinegar and baking soda are mixed together, they react and cancel each other out. It looks impressive, but once the fizzing stops, the cleaning power is reduced. I prefer formulas that make sense chemically and practically.

Does vinegar kill germs
Vinegar can help reduce some bacteria, but it is not considered a registered disinfectant. For high risk contamination, I use a product specifically labeled for that purpose.

I like simple systems that make sense. I like knowing what I am spraying on my counters. I also like knowing when to reach for something stronger and not overthink it.

You do not need a cabinet full of products to keep a clean home. Just a few that work and a little common sense in the kitchen.

If you are slowly switching over to more non toxic cleaning, start here. One bottle at a time. It adds up.
