Before any fruits or vegetables ever make it into my fridge, they get washed.

This is something I started doing years ago when my kids were little and we were constantly running from practice to practice. I learned quickly that if fruit was clean and ready to eat, they grabbed it. If it wasn’t, they didn’t.

So I began washing everything as soon as I walked in the door from the grocery store, and I’ve done it that way ever since. Over the years, this DIY fruit and veggie wash has become part of my weekly routine, and it’s one of the simplest habits that’s helped me keep our kitchen running smoothly.

Now, with one daughter engaged and in her own home, two kids in college, and my “baby” still in high school, I still follow the same routine.

It keeps our kitchen running smoothly and makes healthy choices easier.

My Simple Sink Method (What I’ve Used for Years)

When I get home from the store, the first thing I do is head to the kitchen sink.

I rinse it out, plug it, and place all my fruits and vegetables inside. Apples, grapes, berries, peppers, cucumbers, whatever I brought home that week.

Then I sprinkle baking soda over everything and fill the sink with cold water. While everything soaks, I put groceries away and get settled back into the house.

By the time I’m finished, my produce is ready to rinse, dry, and store.

What You’ll Need:

Clean sink or large bowl

Cold water

1–2 tablespoons baking soda

How I Do It:

Place produce in a clean sink.

Sprinkle baking soda over the top.

Fill with cold water until covered.

Let soak 12–15 minutes.

Gently rub firm fruits and vegetables.

Rinse well under running water.

Dry with a clean towel.

This method helps remove dirt, residue, and surface pesticides without using harsh chemicals.

It’s simple, affordable, and something I’ve trusted in my own home for years.

A Little Tip for Berry Lovers

We are a big berry family in this house.

Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and grapes are always in our fridge when they’re in season.

After washing and drying berries, I store them in mason jars in the refrigerator. This keeps them fresh much longer.

Do You Really Need a Produce Spray?

These days, it seems like there’s a spray for everything, including fruits and vegetables.

Many of them are beautifully marketed and promise a lot, but for most families, they’re simply an unnecessary expense.

Over the years, I’ve tried quite a few of those sprays myself, simply out of curiosity and convenience. But I always found myself coming back to baking soda and water, because it cleans produce well without adding another product to my shopping list.

Sometimes I can’t help but wonder… are we trying to wash toxins off our food with more toxins, simply because many of us assume something is safer when it’s marketed that way?

In many ways, it reminds me of how our grandmothers cared for their homes using simple, natural ingredients and common sense. They trusted what came from the earth more than what came in a bottle.

We may live in a different world now, but that same mindset still serves us well.

That said, I know some people enjoy having a quick spray on hand, especially for busy afternoons or lunch packing.

If that’s you, here’s the gentle option I recommend.

Quick Baking Soda Produce Spray (For Busy Days)

This is meant for quick rinses when you’re grabbing a piece of fruit and heading out the door.

It’s not a replacement for a full wash, just a helpful convenience.

You’ll Need:

1 cup warm distilled water

½ teaspoon baking soda

Glass spray bottle

Instructions:

Dissolve baking soda in warm water.

Let cool completely.

Pour into spray bottle.

Shake before each use.

Spray produce, rinse, and dry.

Store in the refrigerator and use within 5–7 days.

Final Thoughts

Somewhere along the way, we were taught that convenience should always come first.

That if there’s a shortcut, a spray, or a packaged solution, it must be better than taking a few extra minutes to do something well.

But over the years, I’ve learned that those little “convenience” purchases add up. They cost more. They clutter our homes. And many times, they don’t even work as well as the simple methods our grandmothers relied on.

Washing produce with baking soda and water takes a few extra minutes. Storing food properly takes a little intention. Building healthy routines takes consistency.

But those small efforts pay off.

So many of those old-fashioned habits haven’t disappeared because they stopped working.

They’ve just gotten lost along the way.

And they’re worth bringing back.

One simple routine at a time.

A Gentle Way to Welcome a New Season into Your Home

Long before shelves were lined with synthetic sprays and artificial fragrances, herbs were simply part of everyday homemaking. Sage was a staple in kitchens, often hanging to dry, simply because it worked. It freshened the air, added warmth to meals, and connected the home to the garden just outside the door.

Somewhere along the way, we were told that caring for our homes had to smell like chemicals and come in plastic bottles. Using sage again feels like finding our way back to something simpler. It reminds me that non toxic living does not have to be complicated. It can begin with a handful of fresh herbs, a pot of water, and the willingness to try the old ways again.

That is why I love sage. It brings history back into the home in the quietest and most beautiful way.

Why I Love Using Sage in My Home

Sage has been used in homes for centuries as a way to mark change and bring a sense of freshness into everyday spaces. Long before we relied on artificial fragrances, herbs were part of the rhythm of caring for a home.

The yogi in me loves the idea of sage as a cleanser of a space, not because I expect it to work magic, but because it gives me a moment to pause, reset, and welcome a new season with intention. After a deep clean, a simple mist of this spray feels like the final step that signals a room is truly finished.

As winter slowly gives way to spring, this has become one of my favorite ways to mark that shift. It is a small ritual that carries history, beauty, and a fresh beginning all at once.

Every fall, when the air shifts just a little and my kitchen starts smelling like simmer pots and spice blends, I pull out my big glass jar. Because that’s when it’s officially Fire Cider season.

Fire Cider has been around for generations. Originally rooted in folk herbalism, it’s a homemade herbal tonic made with raw apple cider vinegar and a combination of immune-supporting, digestive-loving, circulation-boosting ingredients. Garlic, ginger, onions, citrus, herbs, and peppers are all steeped for weeks until the flavors get bold, bright, and just a little addictive.

In other words, Fire Cider is not a gentle wellness elixir.
It’s warm, zesty, sharp, and it means business.
You will feel it. And then you’ll want another sip.

And here’s what I love most: we can still take care of our families with what we make at home.
Simple ingredients. Real nourishment. No mystery formulas.
Just chopping garlic and ginger, adding sprigs of rosemary and thyme, slicing citrus, pouring golden raw apple cider vinegar over everything.

Because truly, this is kitchen medicine. The kind our grandmothers’ grandmothers made.
From Appalachian folk herbalists, to Amish kitchens brewing Master Tonic, all the way back to the Old European Four Thieves Vinegar.
The recipes vary, the names change, but the heart stays the same:

Real food – Real herbs – Real wellness.

And making it feels powerful.
Traditional, historic, passed down from our grandmothers’ grandmothers.
A little homestead grit. A little old-world herbal wisdom.
Carried forward in our own kitchens today.

Which is why, when cold and flu season comes around, I don’t like feeling unprepared.
I keep two things ready in my home:

My elderberry syrup shots for daily nourishment and immune resilience

Fire Cider for when the body needs support now

What Is Fire Cider?

Fire Cider is a spicy, citrusy, herbal vinegar infusion used traditionally to support:

The immune system

Circulation and warmth

Respiratory health

Digestion

The vinegar extracts + preserves beneficial compounds from the herbs and roots, making them easier for your body to use.

It’s real food doing real work.

Why Fire Cider Actually Works

As a result of combining pungent, spicy, and aromatic foods (like garlic, ginger, jalapeño, and herbs) with raw apple cider vinegar, you create a tonic that supports the body in several ways. Such as:

Boost circulation, helping immune cells move more efficiently

Support digestion, which is foundational for strong immune function

Help break up mucus and sinus congestion

Encourage a healthy inflammatory response

So when your body needs support, Fire Cider gives it something real and familiar to work with.

You’ll Need:

Important: Place a piece of parchment paper between the jar and the lid to avoid corrosion.
Raw apple cider vinegar can react with metal lids over time, so this protects your jar and keeps the flavor clean.

And yes, the first sip is a moment. Then you’ll start to crave that warm, clearing feeling.

A Few Gentle Notes

Fire Cider is strong and naturally spicy, so start slow and listen to your body.

If you have reflux, ulcers, or a very sensitive stomach, dilute it in warm water or tea.

Because it’s made with raw apple cider vinegar, rinsing your mouth with water afterward can help protect tooth enamel. (Don’t brush immediately after acidic foods).

If you’re taking blood thinners or have gallbladder or kidney issues, check with a healthcare practitioner before using regularly.

Not recommended for children under 1 year old if sweetened with honey.

This isn’t medical advice — just traditional herbal common sense.
Your body will tell you what it likes. Start small, adjust, and find your rhythm.

How I Pair Fire Cider With Elderberry

Here’s the wellness rhythm that works in my home:

They balance each other beautifully.
Elderberry is your daily shield.
Fire Cider is your defense mode.

As soon as the air cools down after our long Texas summers, I’m ready for all the cozy fall vibes. Fall has always been my favorite season—maybe because it’s my birthday season, maybe because the kids come home from college for the holidays, or maybe just the way the leaves change and the crisp air makes everything feel new again.

One of my favorite ways to bring that cozy fall feeling into our home is with simmer pots.

A simmer pot (sometimes called stovetop potpourri) is simply a mix of fruit, herbs, and spices gently simmered in water. The steam fills the house with natural fragrance—without any of the toxic chemicals hiding in store-bought candles or sprays.

I especially love a simmer pot because it lets me use up what I already have. Citrus peels that might’ve gone in the trash? Into the pot they go. Apple cores, extra herbs, even a scrap of ginger root—it’s funny what you start “recycling” once you get into simmer pots. Nothing wasted, everything cozy.

The best part? I can start a pot in the morning, and my house smells amazing and welcoming all day long, until I turn it off at bedtime. It’s become a little ritual, and I have so much fun playing with new recipes and finding fresh combinations.

Here are some of my favorite fall simmer pot recipes, the ones that make my home feel warm, cozy, and perfectly autumn.

Classic Cozy Fall

Smells like apple pie baking—comfort in a pot.

1 apple, sliced

Peel of 1 orange

2–3 cinnamon sticks

4 whole cloves

Pumpkin Spice Kitchen

Because fall without pumpkin spice? Not happening.

Pumpkin scraps or 1–2 tablespoons dried pumpkin cubes (Yes, that’s a thing—and it’s Pinterest-level genius, because not everyone’s carving a pumpkin on a Tuesday.)

1 teaspoon nutmeg

1 teaspoon allspice

A splash of vanilla extract

Crisp Autumn Forest

Fresh and woodsy, like taking a fall hike through the trees.

2 sprigs rosemary or pine clippings

Peel of 1 lemon

A handful of dried juniper berries (optional)

3–4 whole cloves

Sweet & Cozy Chai

Spicy and warm—like curling up with your favorite chai latte.

2–3 slices fresh ginger

2 star anise

4–5 cardamom pods

1 cinnamon stick

Citrus Clean Morning

Bright and uplifting—perfect after a busy week.

Peel of 1 grapefruit (or 2 oranges)

1 lime, sliced

A handful of fresh mint or thyme sprigs

2 cinnamon sticks

How to Make a Simmer Pot

Fill a medium saucepan or small crockpot halfway with water.

Add your ingredients.

Bring to a gentle simmer, then reduce to low.

Keep an eye on the water level—add more as it evaporates.

Pro tip: Save the cooled blend in the fridge overnight and re-simmer the next day. When you’re done, toss the scraps in your compost.

Why Simmer Pots Are My Fall Must-Have

They’re non-toxic and family-friendly.

They make use of scraps—like citrus peels—so nothing goes to waste.

They fill the house with fragrance all day long.

They’re fun and creative—I love trying new combos.

(I made this for a friend with a painful boil—and it saved the day)

There’s something incredibly satisfying about whipping up a natural remedy that really works. A few months ago, one of my girlfriends was dealing with a stubborn, painful boil—right where her bra band sits. Ouch. She had tried everything, but nothing was helping. So I handed her a little tin of homemade black drawing salve I’d made for our herbal first aid kit—and within a couple days, it was gone.

She couldn’t believe it. And honestly? Neither could I. But here’s the thing: this salve is no trendy wellness fluff—it’s old-school medicine chest magic, made modern. This stuff pulls. Like… really pulls.

If you’ve got kids, pets, splinters, bug bites, boils, ingrown hairs, or random skin annoyances popping up—this salve might just be your new best friend.

What Is a Black Drawing Salve Used For?

If you’ve ever wondered what that dark gray salve is that herbalists swear by—this is it.

Black drawing salves have been around forever. Traditionally used to “draw out” infections, splinters, boils, and insect stingers, they combine absorbent clays, pulling herbs, and powerful essential oils to help the body do its job—naturally.

Now, let’s be clear: this isn’t some mystery goop. Every ingredient has a purpose. And it’s made with things you probably already have in your herbal cabinet if you’ve been hanging out here a while.

Frequently Asked Questions About Drawing Salve

Q: What does black drawing salve actually do?
A: It helps “draw out” things like splinters, ingrown hairs, pus from boils, insect bites, and toxins using natural absorbent ingredients like activated charcoal and bentonite clay.

Q: Can you use drawing salve on a boil?
A: Yes! That’s exactly what I made it for—and it worked beautifully. Just be sure to clean the skin first, apply a small amount, and cover it with a clean bandage.

Q: Will this stain clothing or sheets?
A: Yep. Activated charcoal will stain fabric, so use a bandage and avoid your favorite light-colored PJs. It’s worth it, though.

Q: Is this safe for kids?
A: It’s gentle, but always do a patch test first and avoid using near eyes or open wounds. I’ve used it on bug bites and splinters with my own family.

Q: Where can I buy the ingredients?
A: I’ve linked all my clean ingredient picks above including activated charcoal, clay, oils, and tins.

Final Thoughts

This little salve tin lives in our home first aid kit now—and it’s earned its place. Whether it’s bug bites, ingrown hairs, or surprise “what the heck is that?!” skin things, this salve shows up and does its job.

Give it a try. You might be shocked at how powerful a few kitchen ingredients can be.

Let’s be honest—summer is brutal on skin. Between sweaty workouts, long baseball tournaments, hours in wet swimsuits, and nonstop outdoor activities in the heat, the skin struggles are real. That’s exactly why I created this DIY anti-fungal salve—a natural, homemade remedy that soothes everything from athlete’s foot to swimsuit chafing and skin irritation caused by heat, moisture, and friction.

We’re a family of athletes and water lovers—baseball boys, gym girls, beach, pool, lake—you name it. And after one too many itchy complaints and drugstore creams with way too many ingredients I couldn’t pronounce, I decided to make a better fix myself.

This DIY anti-fungal salve was born from real-life needs. It’s made with powerful, skin-soothing ingredients that support healing and protect against the kind of skin irritation no one wants to deal with—but everyone gets when the temps rise.

That bright, lemony-herbal aroma is famous for a reason—and the good news is, you don’t need to spend $40 on a candle to recreate it. In this post, I’m sharing my favorite summer scent recipes using simple ingredients like fresh herbs, citrus, and essential oils. and wanted to live in the scent, you’re not alone. That bright, lemony-herbal aroma is famous for a reason—and the good news is, you don’t need to spend $40 on a candle to recreate it.

This summer, I’m all about infusing my home with clean, uplifting scents using two of my favorite natural methods: diffuser blends and stovetop simmer pots. Some of these beautiful aromas come with hidden wellness benefits too—think calm, clarity, and a little natural respiratory support just from the herbs in the air.

Whether you’re resetting your kitchen after dinner or creating a relaxing weekend vibe, these summer scent rituals are one of my favorite non-toxic home practices. Bonus: they’re beautiful to look at and make the whole house feel like a fresh start.

If you’ve been around here for more than a minute, you know I love a good herbal infusion, DIY face cream, or homemade tea blend.
But when it comes to herbal extracts, I don’t make every single one myself. In fact, some of the best herbal tinctures to buy are the ones that save me time, simplify my wellness routine, and just work.

That’s where buying high-quality tinctures comes in — and I’ve got a go-to source I trust completely: Mountain Rose Herbs.

What Is a Tincture (aka Herbal Extract)?

Tinctures are liquid extracts made from herbs — typically using alcohol to pull out the plant’s powerful properties. They’re shelf-stable, concentrated, and super easy to use. Just a dropper full in water or tea, and boom — plant power, activated.

My Real-Life Approach to Tinctures

I buy some, I make some, and I follow a practical approach that works for real life. I’m focused on what actually helps my family feel better — not doing it all from scratch just for the sake of it. Some of the most effective herbal tinctures in my routine are ones I’ve tested over time — and they’ve earned a permanent spot in my natural remedy cabinet.

When I Buy Tinctures:

It includes herbs I don’t keep in stock (like rhodiola or goldenseal)

I want to try it first before buying a bunch of dried herbs to make my own — not all herbs work the same for every person, and sometimes a different plant ends up working better for the same issue

I need something now and can’t wait six weeks

Some blends are just more efficient to buy — especially the ones that involve hard-to-find herbs, advanced extraction techniques, or time I simply don’t have. As someone who’s taken herbalism courses and loves making my own remedies, I still fully trust Mountain Rose Herbs when I decide to buy instead. Their tinctures are made with clean, organic ingredients, expert formulations, and proper extraction methods I respect.

When I Make My Own:

I have the dried herbs on hand (usually from Mountain Rose Herbs!)

I feel like getting creative and blending my own

I just got a new shipment of dried herbs from Mountain Rose Herbs, and yes — it’s full of future oils, infusions, and maybe a tincture or two. I always start with their dried herbs when I make my own. The quality is top-tier.

But as I’ve started running out, I’ve been slowly replacing them with herbs from Mountain Rose Herbs instead. My last order arrived in just a few days, and the quality? Way more vibrant and fresh. It’s the little upgrades like this that have made a big difference in my DIY remedies lately.

It’s budget-friendly, preservative-free, and packed with all the soothing, anti-aging benefits of real rose petals—without mystery chemicals or artificial fragrance.

In this post, I’m sharing two easy DIY recipes:
– One for mature or sensitive skin (my go-to)
– One for oily or acne-prone skin, made with rose-infused witch hazel

Both are gentle, non-toxic, and made with real-life skin in mind.

A Little Rose Petal Wisdom

Used for centuries in traditional beauty rituals, rose petals aren’t just romantic—they’re powerful. They naturally contain:

Anti-inflammatory compounds that calm redness and irritation

Antioxidants that help protect against premature aging

Gentle astringents that tone and balance the skin

A beautifully subtle aroma that supports emotional calm and relaxation

From ancient Persia to Victorian vanity tables, rose water has been treasured for its ability to nourish skin and lift the mood—and now you can make your own with just a few natural ingredients and no synthetic junk.

While it’s technically a rose hydrosol, you don’t need any fancy equipment. I made it using a simple DIY method with a pot, a bowl, and some ice right on my stovetop.

I started making this non-toxic sunscreen years ago when my kids were little. We practically lived outside every summer — at the pool, the beach, or out on the lake — and I didn’t want to keep slathering them with store-bought stuff full of mystery ingredients I couldn’t pronounce.

So I made my own. And let me tell you — it worked so well. Even on my redheaded kiddo (yes, that kind of fair skin). After hours in the sun and water, I’d reapply during lunch breaks just to be safe, but they were never even red. No burns, no breakouts, no drama. Just healthy skin and a happy mama.

If you’re looking for a simple, non-toxic sunscreen you can trust on your littles (or yourself), this is the recipe I’ve used and loved for years.

☀️ Let’s Be Real: The Sun Isn’t the Enemy

I’ve never believed the sun is something to fear. Our bodies need natural sunlight to produce vitamin D — it supports hormones, mood, immune health, and more.

What I do believe?
That it’s not the sun giving us problems… it’s the chemical-laced products people slather on before heading into it.

Toxic sunscreens, hormone disruptors, synthetic fragrance — all baking into the skin under high UV exposure? That’s the real danger. Tanning beds and extreme sun habits don’t help, but the sun itself isn’t the villain. We just need to be smart about it.

This recipe gives you a safer, non-toxic sunscreen option — one that protects your skin without putting your health at risk.

This site contains Amazon Associate affiliate links.

🧴 What’s in This DIY Sunscreen (and Why It Works)

Coconut Oil
Naturally moisturizing with a gentle SPF around 4–5. It helps create that smooth, spreadable texture and gives your skin a soft glow. Bonus: it smells like summer.

Almond Oil
Lightweight and packed with vitamin E, almond oil helps balance the richness of coconut oil while giving your skin an extra dose of hydration.

Shea Butter
This nourishing butter is rich in vitamins A and E, making it perfect for soothing and protecting sun-exposed skin. It also gives the sunscreen a creamy, buttery consistency.

Vitamin E Oil
A natural preservative and skin-loving antioxidant that helps extend the shelf life of your sunscreen while keeping your skin happy and healthy.

Red Raspberry Seed Oil or Carrot Seed Oil
Both of these plant oils are known for their naturally high SPF properties. They’re packed with antioxidants and can support skin recovery after sun exposure — choose whichever you prefer or have on hand!

Zinc Oxide
This is the key ingredient that gives your sunscreen its broad-spectrum sun protection. Be sure to use non-nano, uncoated zinc oxide — it sits on top of the skin to physically block UVA and UVB rays without absorbing into your bloodstream.

Beeswax
This adds thickness and helps make your sunscreen more water-resistant. Use less for a lotion-style sunscreen, or more for a thicker, stickier balm consistency. I usually use about 3 tablespoons for that just-right middle ground.

📋 How to Make DIY Non-Toxic Sunscreen
